It seems like yesterday but it has been ten plus years since this hoagy slinger resided in every neighborhood in the city. Today very few are left, casualties of the accelerated changing restaurant scene and the plethora of fast-casual joint that sprouted up the past decade. I was never too big of a fan, but I did enjoy their chicken cordon bleu grinder, the colorful interiors that harken back to 1950 soda jerk bars, and some surprisingly delicious deli pastas and salad. So when stomach growls vibrated as I was crossing Riverside Drive via Fishinger for old times sake I went here. It's a section in the small strip on the northeast side.
The place is dressed like the Grinder's of old, but everything is fresh and clean and new looking. With the long line of unevened sized of coolers and displays with deli items and cold salads. The alternating black/white squared flooring runs from door to pop cooler and soda fountain. Red plastic booth with floating tables lined with faux chrome run with the wall. The TV and radio are as remembered, fun and at perfect volume. The spot lighting is soft but illuminating. This classic design makes a breezy environment to enjoy at quick eat.
My chicken cordon bleu grinder hit the spot. It was the same fulfilling formula fit to stay the hunger pangs. With lovely honey mustard, decent tasting ham, a balance of Swiss, and lettuce, tomato and mayo I enjoyed this simple blast from the recent past.
For the price I say it a solid three star but close to four, imho. -

I lived and worked off of west broad for awhile. That's how i became familiar with W G Grinders. I always had mixed feelings about their food. my sandwiches were always super messy and tasted just ok. But i figured id give this location a try. And boy was i disapointed. The service was good everyone was friendly. The place just seemed dark dingy and unapealing. The food was bland and not really worth the price. Not sure whats going on here but something needs to change. I don't like being negative but there is room for improvement.

My wife and I moved to the area about 6 months ago and never went to this place because of the 3 star review. Well I finally tried it and was pleasantly surprised. I just got the original Italian but it was delicious. Definitely a place I will frequent more often and I would recommend it to everyone.

We give one star only because the grinders were good. The restaurant is FILTHY! I don't know the last time anything was wiped down. Need to close for a day and work floor to ceiling. Mustard on the wall, dirty table, need I go on? Ordered iced tea and it was already put away for the night (7:00 dining). It was brought back out and it was empty. Won't ever go back.

It's been a while since I've eaten at a W.G. Grinders... but I don't remember their subs being so unsubstantial. Maybe I just remember wrong, or maybe this particular Grinders doesn't load up their subs as much as the others. Not sure. It wasn't bad... just wasn't particularly satisfying.
Also, the interior of this place needs a refresh. The tables are rather grimy, and there's a bunch of mysteriously empty display cases by the counter.
Oh, and they close at 2pm on Sundays. I literally had to make 2 separate trips here on 2 different days to write this mediocre review, since the first time I tried them was on a Sunday evening!
